My cat dose'nt like me?

i adopted a cat in maine and now he lives at my house in CT but when i pet him he either gets up and goes somewhere else or lets me pet him for like 1 minute then goes. and also he never lay on my lap or even sits on a bed or a couch with me. why does he do this i adopted him when he was 7 monthes old now he is 2 years old he is a maine coon mix.dose any one know how to solve this problem well sometimes he lays on my bed but when i come on the bed to sit next to him he gets up and walks away.
