IF he is matted up you have no choice but to have him clipped down. It is likely that he isn't grooming himself, which is why he was matted in the first place. If you are conscientious about brushing and combing him EVERYWHERE, then once he has been clipped down once he might not need it again. Sometimes they can be clipped down without sedation, it depends on how sweet the cat is. Ask your vet or groomer if that would be possible.
